The whole Dandruff vs. Dry Scalp debate is unsurprisingly common due to the fact they share very similar symptoms. If you do not know exactly what the cause of the flakes of skin coming off from your scalp, or falling on to your clothes, it can make it pretty hard to treat and sort out.
When it is Dandruff
So, when is it dandruff? Well, dandruff is generally characterised by quite large, greasy, waxy flakes of skin that may fall off your scalp when you scratch it or when you brush your hair. They can be quite yellow or grey-ish and cause your scalp to become very itchy.
Unlike a dry scalp, dandruff is usually due to a bacterial infection of the scalp and actually can be quite contagious. So, if you have dandruff do not share a brush, hat, towel or any hair accessories with someone else as there is a chance you could be causing them the very same problem.
Contrary to popular thought, dandruff is not actually caused by an overly dry scalp but actually by the secretion of too much oil (sebum). It can be down to an overgrowth of harmless yeast which feeds from the excess oil within the scalp causing the skin to shred and fall off in flakes.
Dandruff can become quite severe in its symptoms in some cases and can be accompanied by intense itching, oozing or even bleeding, so it is important you visit the doctors to confirm the exact cause of your dandruff.
When it is a Dry Scalp
A dry scalp is usually what most people really have when they think it is dandruff.
It is characterised by small, white flakes of skin that can also fall off when you scratch your scalp or brush your hair, much in the same way as dandruff. So, take note of the appearance of the flakes falling from your head as they could reveal a lot more than you first thought.
A dry scalp can be caused by a number of factors including using poor quality shampoo and conditioner (which strip your scalp of its natural oils, causing dryness), over-washing your hair, washing your hair with hot water, a change/increase in environmental temperature or simply your genes. It may also be accompanied by itching and irritation but is less likely to become as severe as dandruff can be.
