Sunburn Treatment

Sunburn TreatmentAt the moment in the UK, we are having the longest period of consecutive sunshine since 2006, nine days so far, so we should be getting used to applying our sunscreen or sun tan lotion often throughout the day.

We know that sunburn is caused by over exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun but some are unsure of how much exposure is too much. So, if you have sunburned your skin by mistake, our natural sunburn treatment guide will help.

How long does Sunburn last

Mild Sunburn usually lasts for around 4 to 7 days but sunburn can trigger changes in cells that could lead to cancer later in life. So as always the best sunburn treatment is prevention.

Okay, so it’s too late to lecture you about the dangers of going out in the sun without the correct protection. So, what can you do about your lobster red skin…?

Tips for Sunburn Treatment

First if you are in a lot of pain, you can take an inflammatory painkiller such as Ibuprofen or aspirin.

Soak your skin as soon as possible.

Soak your skin in a very cool bath, not cold but cool (Or Shower). Do not use any harsh soaps or detergents with chemicals in as this will irritate your skin further. Please do not have a hot or ice cold shower, this is very dangerous for you and your skin.

Pat dry your skin – do not rub.

Most importantly moisturise!

Apply a very liberal amount of natural moisturiser; we recommend the Syrinx ZA Derma Protector Balm which will soothe and protect your skin using the ingredient Shea Butter to reduce inflammation and redness and prevent scarring. The ingredient Sapropel will add many vitamins, minerals and lipids to your skin, to boost your skin’s immune system along with the included Tea Tree Oil.

Apply this moisturiser as often as you can – we advise about 5 times per day, to hopefully limit the chance of peeling skin.

Throughout the day apply cold compresses to the skin; using maybe a hand towel, leaving it on the affected sun-burnt skin for 20 minutes or until it feels cooler. Do not forget to apply more lotion.

Drink lots and of fluids, preferably water; to rehydrate your body and skin.

If you have to go out – protect yourself from the sun, try to stay in the shade, wear a high factor sunscreen on top of your Derma protector balm which also protects from UV rays and wear loose cotton clothing.

Do not pick or peel your skin as this can cause an infection.

Get medical help if you are at all concerned or if you have a high temperature (a fever), feel nauseous, have blisters, or an infection.
