Summer Tips for Baby Eczema

summer tips for eczema babyAs a parent you know how the hot weather can really affect your baby’s eczema, making the poor baby itchy, uncomfortable and something no-one wants; irritable.

An eczema baby needs to be kept cool at all times, which can be really tricky, we know! However we have a few Summer Tips for Baby Eczema to help you through the hot weather.

Keep in the shade

When you are outside, always keep in the shade where possible.  If this is not possible, place shades on the buggy or use umbrellas that protect from UV rays.  A cotton hat with a large brim goes a long way to protect the head and face from the sun.

Sunscreen for your eczema baby

One of the most difficult challenges is to find a sunscreen for the child or baby with eczema as the ingredients required are usually not eczema friendly, these chemicals, detergents, perfumes and preservatives can make eczema worse. We are however, seeing more and more manufacturers now providing “natural” sun creams without those harmful chemicals but even then you will need to apply some trial and error before you find the right one for your baby.  Also be aware that are not usually as high in SPF.

Car travel

Always try to park the car in the shade so that when you do have to travel its cooler than it would have been – or you can get sunshades for the car. Putting a towel in the seat helps as the towelling can absorb some of the moisture.  If you are on a long journey take frequent breaks to get some fresh air.

Clothing

Keep clothing to a minimum, let your little one run, crawl or roll around the house with no clothes on, it won’t hurt.  However when you venture out in the sun –  long sleeved, long legged light cotton clothing can protect your baby and keep him cool.

Bedtime and sleeping

The sleepless nights are the worst, trying to keep your little one cool a night is a task in itself. Before bedtime it’s advisable to bathe your baby a warm bath  Deep Cleanser Therapy Bar) to cool him down before bedtime. Again keep clothing to a minimum and have cotton sheets.  A window open if it’s safe or a fan can really help.   Also keep nails as short as possible and mitts might help.

Moisturising Dry skin

It is absolutely essential to keep delicate baby skin moisturised, at all times but even more so in the hot weather.

After bathing apply a safe natural moisturiser such as Syrinx Za’s Skin Revitaliser and Emollient. This will add any lost moisture to the skin whist soothing the dry eczema skin.

We hope these Summer Tips for Baby Eczema help you and your baby.
